"Trying hard not to hear but they talk so loud
Their piercing sounds fill my ears try to fill me with doubt
Yet I know that the goal is to keep me from falling"
(McCartney) Sung by Leona Lewis
The interesting part is the last line. It could mean two things: To keep herself from falling completely in love because at this point her sanity is question or to keep herself and the relationship from falling from all these talks and criticism. I believe it's the second but it's really open for any interpretation. This is important in explaining what "bleeding love" is. It basically means you can bleed externally but the effects of emotional bleeding just overshadows the physicality.
In the second line I question what she means by piercing sounds. Are they yelling to the point where what they saying is audible but they just pass off as sounds?

Laughing children play
In cascading hues those leaves
Glisten as they glide

Blog 8: Paraphrase
At the end of the day, a gentle woman sings in a gentle way
Which has brought me into reminiscing, childhood memories from long ago.
I sit under the piano , on my mothers foot as she pressed on the piano pedal and sings.
Looking to what I have become now, although successful I may add
I still long for those day, so I weep trying to bring back that place where I belong
At home, anytime when the piano is played, this is the place I ought to belong.
Though successful and well achieved
I have given up my childhood and this cast called “manhood” I must wear
This burst of memory upon me. Let me weep till my heart is content.
This poem gave me a sense of sadness. When one achieves immense success in the future, you’d think and look at the past but not in a longing and desperate way. What he have given up to achieve this success might be the reason as to why growing up is not so grand. I myself can relate to this piece. At times I feel like I’m growing to fast and immersing myself in this place called the real world. I find myself longing for the care-free childhood days.

To the Desert by Benjamin Alire Saenz
To the Desert
"Break me, I am bread. I will be water for your thirst."
This quote is really interesting. How i interpret it as is this guy telling his love that I can be anything for you. If you need to break me for your sake. Just do it. I can be the water or bread which even one you need. For some reason, when I think of breaking bread i think of the church. Maybe the author is suggesting a holy union that is unbreakable with his lover. The poem itself hints of this guy just going crazy for his lover and he takes it a step further by making it a holy union.

Quote Response 6
A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway(Kennedy, pg 147-151)
“You do not understand. This is a clean and pleasant café. It is well lighted. The light is very good and also, now, there shadows of the leaves.” (Kennedy, pg .150)
“…Each night I am reluctant to close up because there may be some one who needs the café.” (Kennedy, pg. 150)
With the first quote, the qualities of a café is stated : Clean, pleasant, and well lighted. The difference between a café versus bodegas/bars is settled within those qualities and the setting that the place emits. A café has a more homey and comfortable feel to it. Basically, it’s the perfect haven for those who need that homey feel but has no home to look forward to. In the story, a rich old-man was unhappy because his home comprise of his niece. Money and wealth does not make the world go round in this case. It’s that feeling of belonging and want and The café is as close to providing that perfect house setting.
With the second quote, compassion is shown by the older waiter. To think , if only the world was a lot more concern like this waiter, then everybody would be a little happier. From the story the younger waiter is concerned with his own affairs because apparently this old-man is an inconvenient factor in his schedule. While it’s understandable that family comes first, it doesn’t mean that you must compensate your compassionate nature. Even if those need are strangers, that’s how stranger remain strangers. Not caring and lack of initiation.

Kate Chopin The Story of an Hour(Kennedy, pg.326-327)
“Free! Body and soul free!” and “There would be no powerful will bending her in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have the right to impose a private will upon a fellow creature.”(Kennedy, pg. 327)
The emotions that this story invokes is almost comparable to a rollercoaster ride. I started with sympathy towards Mrs. Mallard because of her husbands death. After sympathy I was in the state of disbelief. In the middle of her mourning she found a sense of independence and this is where the quote I choose comes into play. It seems like the death of her husband brought upon a different perspective in regards to love and commitment. It’s sad to think that she realized that love was more of a burden after his death. I wondered if maybe this could be a coping mechanism? Maybe she has lost her sanity? If she is sane though, the duration of her mourning period was just too short to be considered as normal.
As though she has reached some sort of enlightenment, she dies in the end. I was still in disbelief when all of the sudden her life ended abruptly, in the same sporadic nature from depression to a sense of understanding. Overall, I admire the author’s ability to eloquently use words to bring out so many different reaction in the span of one short literary piece.

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson
“that over in the north village they‘re talking about giving up the lottery. Old Man Warner snorted. “Pack of crazy fools,” he said. “Listening to the young folks, nothing’s good enough for them…Used to be a saying about ‘Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon’…There’s always been a lottery” (Kennedy, pg. 219-220).
I choose this passage because it caught my attention right off the bat. The question that came in to mind was; Why would the north village talk about giving up the lottery? Several possibilities could be that winning prices were scarce or that the effort put into making a lottery a success is just too stressful. Either way, the quote “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon” was just too peculiar to me. This almost hinted to me as the reader that something ominous and dark could only come out of this lottery drawing.
My fascination with symbolism has led me pick this story initially. After reading the complete story, I’m still shocked as to what has transpired at the end where Mrs. Hutchinson was stoned to death. Overall, the title in itself is symbolic. When I think of the lottery, I think of wealth and happiness brought by the luck of the draw. In this case, wealth in terms of a good harvest was the supposed outcome of stoning Mrs. Hutchinson to death. It’s ironic (and confusing a bit) when Bill Hutchinson was called and Terry Hutchinson was demanding a do-over.
Another symbolism is the appearance of stone everywhere in the setting. The author mentions children stacking them up and re-mentions it all throughout the plot line when she’s depicting the surroundings.
Another is the old wooden box. It has wear and tare, and its damaged. This symbolizes the continuity of a tradition. The unwillingness to let go. Along with the wooden box are the stones to paper modification to meet the growing population. This shows that no matter what, change is inevitable specially to a growing population. The need to adapt (from stone to paper) was a coping mechanism in an attempt to ease the slowly occurring transition.

“The great world never much interested me(except at the back of my head) since its effects, from what I observed, were so disastrously trivial-other than in their bulk; smelled the same as most public places.” (Carlos, p.289)
I am currently reading(skimming and jumping pages) The Autobiography of William Carlos Williams. In his essay Of Medicine and Poetry, this concluding statement was made to convey the message that in any given situation, it’s what you make out of it. The author is now certain in his profession as a physician in comparison to his earlier essay titled Medicine in which clearly depicts his doubts ( which is a career pathway battle between medicine and writing). In the end he choose medicine as a vessel because it was more practical. He knows very well that writing would not financially support him.
In his essay of Medicine and Poetry, he clearly showed optimism in both medicine and poetry. He introduces this piece by describing medicine as a sort of an artistic process. Art does not judge nor does it favor and this uncovered truth led him to a enlighten perspective on medicine. In regards to writing and poetry, he has shown great compassion for it in earlier writings and strongly reaffirmed it in this piece. He also considers writing a great form of art.
The initial negative connotation that struck me when I initially read the quote was subdued after dissecting the sentence and relating it to the overall thesis of the writing. I think the usage of the phrase “smelled the same as most public places”, serves its purpose for comedic effect. In parenthesis, he states that “The great world never interested me (except at the back of my head) …” and with this, he incorporated it into his life long profession and his never-dying love for writing.
It relates to me in a sense that being in college, you don’t necessarily enjoy every aspect of it. The constant cramming and procrastinating at times could get tiring. To ease the burden of everyday life I need to put into practice that everyday is really what you make of it. Mentality and attitude counts for the most part and it plays a role how you develop as a person. Also, this had thought me to be optimistic. Find the good in what you do.

“ His face was dark and his back stiff, as he‘d just had an injection of iron, and my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the was going to be to me hereafter .” (Kennedy, p.19)
This message concludes the story in a negative tone and is of great significance in relevance to the message that the author is trying to convey. In the end of the story, Sammy quits and walks away due to the way that Lengel, the manager, humiliated the girls. The three, bikini-wearing girls who walked into the store was basically judged by the way that they were dressed and it was against store policy. The supermarket is like the world almost. An event out of the ordinary occurred and it was frowned upon.
In the quote I choose, injection of iron was used. I think the word iron symbolizes how hard society can be towards each other. Iron containing various physical properties, behaves like how society is portrayed in the text. Iron is a metal that is malleable but with use of great pressure and strength. Change is possible but there will always be resistance. Second, not only is this injection of iron used to describe the current state of the manager. It’s also used to foreshadow the iron(hard-weight) that Sammy will have to bear after quitting.
Adjectives like dark and stiff was used also. Sammy realizes that the consequences he’ll soon have to face is like the dark and stiff-back manager. Sammy stood by his conviction in the end yet he knows that it comes with unwanted consequence. Possibly with his parents who is great friends with the manager.
It’s interesting a simple setting like the supermarket was the setting yet the vivid imagery that the author portrays is commendable. He uses onomatopoeia very effectively and made it seem like a day in the supermarket is actually eventful when most of us don’t really take notice of the smallest details that occur. Honestly, If I was to write a piece, most likely the setting would not occur in a supermarket because I really don’t see excitement when I think of supermarkets.
Several questions came to mind while reading this piece. Some could be trivial and not have any significance to the story. It’s just on a “want-to-know” basisWhy is it that Sammy refers to the manger as Lengel?.What was the purpose behind mentioning the main character’s name only towards the end? Is Queenie the name of the leader in the group of bikini-wearing girls that entered the supermarket? If so was it really insignificant to mention the other girls’ name. What does the acronym of A&P stand for? Is the author like the main character, Sammy, in this reading?

Autobiography
Hello! my name is Melanie and most of the people i know just calls me "Mel" so feel free to do so as well. I'm currently a sophomore pursuing a bachelor's degree in Biology with a prospective minor in anthropology and chemistry. My hobbies include tennis, singing, (in the shower ...everyone should try this! I find it to be stress relieving)internet surfing, reading books, and playing games (although I'm really not that good).
It terms of reading my preferred genre would have to be romance. I occasionally branch out into other genres but the rarest of all would have to be suspense/thriller/horror. The reason is because of one specific incident.I don't recall the title of the book exactly but the author was Stephen King. The type of imagery depicted in my thoughts felt so real that I ended up having nightmares about the novel. Since then, I have the tendency to favor stories that portrays the classic ending of happily ever after. Most of my readings are for academic purposes. I do favor poetry and free-writing though when it comes to literature. Writing poetry to me, as a source of ventilation, has helped me a lot throughout the years.
Based upon inquiry, three other room mate of mines read what is essentially required out to them. My first room mate is an international student and being the studious person that she is, leisure reading is not something she indulges in. She reads a lot of text books that pertains to business. My following room mate has an extensive collection of books in her room.Mostly of fantasy and sci-fi, she claims that it is a way to vent. Being a student in the Science Department, she tends to compare the possibility of claims stated in sci-fi novels. Also, it offsets the logistic mentality imposed by her degree or major. Lastly, the final room mate I interviewed loves literature in general. She is in the Arts and Theatres program and the reason why she loves reading is to fully grasp the emotions she would eventually have to portray in plays.
